"Most players do not need to practise more. They need to practise the right thing, write the number down, and be honest about what it says. It's too easy to practice what we enjoy, or what we are already good at"

About the Assessment

The DartsMatt Benchmark Assessment gives players a simple, repeatable way to understand exactly where their game needs work, rather than relying on averages, feelings or guesswork.

In just 117 darts and around 30 minutes, including a proper warm-up, it measures four key areas of performance: Singles, Power Scoring, Doubles and Set-up, producing four sub-totals that show where a player is strongest and, more importantly, what is holding the rest of their game back.

The assessment is designed to be repeated monthly or before and after a four-week training block, creating a clear test → target → train → retest cycle so players can see whether their practice is actually making a difference. The value is not just in the numbers but in what they reveal:

Matt Tizzard uses the same assessment with his own coaching players as the starting point for every training plan, while his experience coaching players from club level through to aspiring professionals has shown him that many players do not necessarily need to practise more, they need to practise the right thing.

By keeping the conditions consistent and comparing each assessment with your own previous scores rather than somebody else’s, the benchmark turns practice into measurable progress and can uncover weaknesses players may otherwise overlook, particularly in areas such as set-up play, which the assessment identifies as “the part nobody practises.”
